TRADITIONS, MYTHS AND LEGENDS OF LA GUAJIRA
(5 Nights 6 Days)
Traditions, Myths, and Legends" is a journey through those mythical and sacred places, inhabited by spirits that communicate with the residents through dreams and become stories told by children and adults with equal authority. It's a journey through the ethnic and cultural diversity of the department of La Guajira, where stories turn into songs to the rhythm of an accordion.
Day 1. Legends: The Wayuu in Their Universe
Reception in the city of Riohacha and transfer to an encounter with one of Colombia's most significant living cultures, the WAYUU. Here, we can experience their customs, learn to listen to the sounds of the wind, get to know their myths and legends, taste their food, appreciate their crafts, and learn to distinguish different weavings. As night falls, we sleep in a hammock, infused with the patience and dreams of Wayuu women, handmade and taking three to six months to craft.
Day 2. Customs: On the Way to Jepira
A new day begins, and in the kitchen, accompanied by delicious coffee, dreams from the previous night are shared while preparing corn arepas, eggs, or chivo salpicón for breakfast, along with more coffee. We continue our journey to Manaure and learn about another tradition of this indigenous group, the artisanal extraction of sea salt, with a tour of the artisanal salt ponds. We continue the journey and pass through Uribía, where another facet of the indigenous people can be observed, that of traders. We proceed to Cabo de la Vela, arrive at the lodge, have lunch, and rest for a while. In the late afternoon, we'll be taken to the hill where the lighthouse is located, from where the beauty of Cabo can be fully appreciated. Return to the lodge – We invite you to enjoy the starry sky that nature usually bestows upon us in this magical place.
Day 3. Myths - Jepirra: Cabo - Palomino
We set off early to take a boat and visit the most sacred site for the Wayuu, JEPIRRA, where they believe the souls of the deceased Wayuu rest. We pay tribute to the Spirits of these waters as a sign of respect and gratitude for allowing us to learn a bit more about their world and also to ensure a tranquil journey and a benign future. On the return journey, we head to the beaches of Kamaichi (better known as Pilón de Azúcar) for a swim in the cold sea waters and also to cleanse physical and spiritual impurities. After lunch, we head to the beaches of Palomino. Dinner and accommodation at Hotel Prima Luna or similar.
Day 4. Traditions: Palomino - Camarones
For the indigenous people, the Sierra Nevada is the heart of the world. This territory is surrounded by sacred places for their culture. Four different but related indigenous peoples live in its slopes: the Arhuacos (or Ikas), the Wiwas, the Koguis, and the Kankuamos. On this day, we can visit a Kogui community, talk to the Mamo (subject to their availability) to get to know their culture and traditions.
Return to Palomino.
Lunch. In the afternoon, we will participate in Tubbing, which involves a 30-minute hike up the mountain until we reach a point where we will slide down the river on inner tubes until we reach the estuary. Transfer to Camarones. Dinner and accommodation.
Day 5. Traditions: Riohacha
Breakfast. We will arrive at the Los Flamencos Fauna and Flora Sanctuary to take a canoe tour of the Navío Quebrao Lagoon, where we will likely find Pink Flamingos, Spoonbills, Great Herons, among other birds. Lunch.
Departure to Riohacha and an opportunity to experience another cultural experience, enjoying an afternoon of Riohachera traditions where, to the sound of a caja, guacharaca, and accordion, we will learn about the musical tradition that runs through the veins of the Guajira territory.
Transfer to the Gimaura Hotel or similar. Dinner and accommodation.
Day 6. Riohacha
